Start off your day at Kenye-Kenye Jamango (Sand Mosque) in Gunjur. It’s a sacred site associated with Sheikh Omar Futi, who was an islamic scholar. Legend has it that he prayed on the rocks before going to start up his empire. The mosque is built around the rocks. It’s on a beautiful scenic site near the ocean. People come from all over West Africa and abroad to visit.

Then take the Coastal road towards Kartong. The road is dotted with many settlements, local architecture, tropical trees and street sellers. Kartong has an abundance of waterfronts to explore. You can take a boat ride or visit local restaurants.

From Kartong, head back towards Serrekunda using the Coastal road with a stop at Tanji Beach. Here you can watch the sunset and shop at the oceanside market for fresh seafood, Gambians gifts and food. There are opportunities for bird watching or visiting the local museum.

There are many other attractions along the way, but these should get you started for a day trip visiting South Gambia.

The post is part of the “I Love Gambia” series.
