Tips for Succeeding/Crushing/Surviving the First Few Weeks at a New job

1. Build your professional community at work at all levels by introducing yourself

2. Absorb everything you can — and ask good smart questions.

3. Take notes.

4. Figure out the lay of the land: who’s who, culture, organization’s functions, etc.

5. Learn the manager’s preferences.

6. Clarify your mutual expectations with your manager.

7. Add value in ways big or small.

8. Do your work well.

9. Take stock, and if you’re feeling under-prepared for your new role, work on up-leveling your skills.

10. Seek out a friend. Get to know your team better.

11. Learn how to navigate and enjoy your new workplace: restrooms, break room, etc.

12. Get organized (calendars, to-do lists) and set good habits (time management, professional development).

13. Identify early wins.

14. Set ambitious goals for yourself work towards those goals by diving into situations that support them, and continually repeat this process.

15. Don’t be too demanding.

16. Take the time to thank the people who are showing you the ropes.

17. Don’t try to be too sweet, be yourself.
